It opened in September 1901 with just eighteen pupils, and it will mark 125 years of educating girls in September 2026. It is now one of the larger grammar schools in the country, with well over a thousand girls, and boys are not admitted at any stage.
The school sums up its ethos in four values: infectious joy, limitless ambition, insatiable curiosity and generous spirit. It is plain about wanting each girl to find her own interests and make lasting friendships, and wellbeing carries real weight here, recognised by national wellbeing and Mind awards. There is a full programme of music, sport and other activities beyond lessons. In 2023 the school was named Secondary School of the Year in the Sunday Times Parent Power guide, a nod to both its results and its pastoral care.
