If you have a boy who works hard and wants a school that will throw plenty back at him, Wirral Grammar School for Boys is a long-established option on the peninsula. It is a selective grammar taking boys from age 11, and it has taught them on the same Cross Lane site in Bebington since 1931. Its motto, Sapientia Ianua Vitae, translates as "wisdom is the gateway to life," and the school describes itself as community-centred and inclusive, holding to the view that academically able children should have an equal chance at a grammar education whatever their background. From September 2026 its sixth form opens to girls as well as boys.
Sport is a genuine strength, and the school is open about how much it cares about it. The aim, in its own words, is to give as many boys as possible a breadth of sporting opportunity and a lifelong love of the game, and the cricketers toured Barbados in 2026. Music runs alongside as an established part of the wider offer. Boys are organised into four houses, Barber, Dodds, Lever and Hodgson, and the school sums up its culture simply as working hard and playing hard.
It suits an academically able boy who will commit to his studies and then throw himself into sport and the life of the school beyond lessons, whatever his background. Led by headteacher Simon Ascroft, it is a settled, busy place that holds firmly to its community-centred roots and wants its boys to leave both well taught and well rounded, ready for whatever comes after.
