Watford Grammar School for Girls is a partially selective girls' school using the GL exam board for its 11+ entrance. The 11+ process is single-stage with no interview. The school operates a catchment area, and while the pass mark and selectivity ratio are unknown, it caters to around 1,470 girls with a co-educational sixth form.

If your daughter is the kind who is hungry to learn but doesn't crumble under pressure, Watford Grammar School for Girls is one of the first places Hertfordshire families think of. It is a partially selective girls' school in the middle of Watford, drawing pupils from across the town and well beyond, and around 1,470 girls attend, with a co-educational sixth form. What parents tend to notice first is the tone of the place: studious and ambitious, but down-to-earth with it. The Good Schools Guide describes girls who are "talkative and not afraid to speak their minds", which tells you a good deal about the kind of confidence the school grows.

The history runs deep and is still marked every year. The school traces back to 1704, when Dame Elizabeth Fuller founded a free school for local children beside the parish churchyard; she is still remembered each year at a Founder's Day service. The girls' school settled on its present central site in 1907. Music is a particularly big part of daily life, so much so that some pupils are admitted on musical aptitude alone, and the programme on offer is unusually broad. Despite the town-centre setting there are playing fields, courts, a sports hall and an indoor pool, and a firm phone rule keeps the school day focused.

Led by headmistress Sylvia Tai since 2018, this is a genuinely diverse community that increasingly puts wellbeing alongside results. It suits a hard-working, motivated girl who will be happiest moving at pace alongside others who feel exactly the same.
