South Wilts Grammar School for Girls

If you have a daughter who loves to read and wants to be properly stretched, South Wilts Grammar School is the kind of place where one of its own pupils told the Good Schools Guide, I drew the lucky straw to be here. It is a selective school for girls in Salisbury, taking pupils from eleven to eighteen, with boys joining alongside the girls in the sixth form since 2020. The school opened in 1927 with just over two hundred girls, on a green site about a mile north of the city centre, and its original red-brick buildings have been added to steadily over the decades as it has grown to around 1,200 pupils.
The Good Schools Guide calls this selective education at its best, and describes a school that is unashamedly academic but not a hothouse, a reading school where a culture of literacy is built in from the start. Pastoral care gets real attention through the school's Live Well programme, and the school works hard to widen access, providing free academic resources to some applicants. Sport features strongly too, with netball among the most popular of a wide range on offer. Girls arrive from more than seventy primary schools across the area, sitting the eleven-plus in maths, English and verbal reasoning in year 6.
The head, Dr Amanda Smith, has led the school since 2024, having come from Poole Grammar, and is a strong advocate for girls' education. South Wilts suits an able, motivated girl who enjoys reading and wants to be stretched in a warm, settled grammar that takes care of the whole child as well as the grades.
