South Hampstead High School

It is a girls' school in north-west London, part of the Girls' Day School Trust, and it has been educating girls in the city for a long time. It opened in 1876 as one of the early GDST schools with just 27 pupils, and now draws families from across north and central London and takes girls through to the sixth form.
The school sets out its values as aspiration, creativity, kindness, courage and commitment, and it treats the arts and sport as seriously as academic work, with music, drama and games all holding a strong place in school life. Parents tend to talk about an open, outward-looking feel rather than anything narrow or pressured, an atmosphere that is academic but not airless, with plenty going on beyond lessons. The school is rightly proud of its former pupils, who include the actors Helena Bonham Carter and Dame Angela Lansbury, a reminder of how far the creative side here reaches.
Led since January 2017 by Headmistress Vicky Bingham, who read at Oxford and has set a forward-thinking tone, South Hampstead suits a girl who wants to be challenged in the classroom while also having space for everything else, and who will enjoy the pace of a London day school. It is a school that lets a girl be ambitious and well-rounded at the same time.
