Sale Grammar School is a mixed grammar school in Trafford, admitting pupils from 11 to 18. It uses the GL exam board for its 11+ entry, and while there is no official pass mark, candidates should aim for 75-80%+ in practice tests. There is no interview stage, and the school operates a priority catchment area including M33, WA14, WA15, and Trafford Authority residents within the M23 postcode.

Plenty of parents in Trafford choose Sale for one plain reason: they want a mixed grammar rather than a single-sex one, and here a son or daughter can be stretched academically without the place tipping into something purely competitive. It is a co-educational state grammar in Sale, taking pupils from 11 to 18. One of the younger grammars in the area, it was formed in 1991 when Sale Boys' and Sale Girls' Grammar Schools merged on the site of the old girls' school on Marsland Road. The Good Schools Guide calls it something of the new kid on the block beside long-established neighbours like the Altrincham grammars, but says its popularity as a mixed school has made it a strong draw in its own right.

The school puts excellent relationships at the heart of its community, where everyone is valued and treated with kindness, and the aim is to develop curious lifelong learners and creative thinkers. The Good Schools Guide describes a truly wonderful co-ed grammar that delivers academic strength while caring for creativity, resilience and a balanced approach to life. Sport is wide-ranging, hockey, football, netball, rugby, cricket and athletics alongside basketball and handball, with girls' football a particular strength. Reviewers describe pupils as a lively, switched-on bunch, interested in the world and well behaved on trips.

This is a school for an academically able child whose family wants a mixed grammar with a rounded, balanced culture. It has been led since September 2020 by headteacher Mrs Rebecca Smith, a biologist by background. It suits a child who wants to work hard and still have room to find their own thing.
