King Edward VI Grammar School
King Edward VI Grammar School (KEVIGS) is a co-educational grammar school in Louth, Lincolnshire, offering Year 7 entry through the Lincolnshire Consortium of Grammar Schools (LCGS). The single-stage 11+ selection process uses GL Assessment exams, and there is no interview stage. As a state grammar school, there are no annual tuition fees for attending.
King Edward VI Grammar School sits in the middle of Louth, the small market town on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds, and it has been part of the town for longer than almost any school in the country. There has been teaching in Louth since the Middle Ages, and the school in its present form dates from 1551, when Edward VI granted it land and money; Elizabeth I later handed it the manor of Louth itself. Its most famous former pupil is the poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson, who was a boy here in the 1810s, and the explorers John Franklin and John Smith came through its doors before him. A school with that long a memory tends to wear its history lightly, and this one does.
Today it's a co-educational state grammar taking children from age 11 through to sixth form, having merged with the town's girls' school in 1965. Entry to Year 7 is selective, through the Lincolnshire Consortium 11+: two multiple-choice papers, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning, sat at the start of Year 6 in September, with no interview. The school offers around 145 places a year, and children who pass the test and live in the catchment or attend a feeder primary are the first to be offered them.
It became an academy in 2015 and has kept investing in the place, with a new sports hall and a refurbished library in recent years.
