If your daughter is bright, motivated and wants to be surrounded by girls who feel the same, Haberdashers' Girls' is one of the names parents in north London say with a certain reverence. It is one of the strongest academic girls' schools in the country, but the Good Schools Guide is keen to point out it has caught up pastorally too, with extra pastoral staff and proper mental-health support brought in under the current head. For all its size, parents and pupils describe a close-knit, collegiate place. The girls are, in the Guide's words, 'diligent, resilient, articulate and go-getting', and not the type to trample over others on the way up.
The school traces back to 1698, when Robert Aske, master of the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers, left money for a school and almshouses in east London. It moved to its present home beside the boys' school in leafy Elstree in the early 1970s, and the 100-acre rural site still feels a world away from the capital despite sitting minutes from the M1 and M25, with a 34-route coach network gathering girls from a wide area. Sport is a particular point of pride, with seven tennis courts, a pool, sports hall and fitness suite, and there are around 160 clubs to dip into. One nice quirk for older girls: every sixth former is taught at least one subject alongside the neighbouring boys. Old girls range from broadcaster Vanessa Feltz to actress Talulah Riley.
Led since 2023 by headmistress Dr Hazel Bagworth-Mann, Habs Girls suits a girl who wants high expectations and real rigour without losing the warmth. Places are scarce and hard-won, and most girls choose to stay right through to the end.
