Gateways School is an independent co-educational day school in Harewood, Leeds, offering Year 7 entry through a single-stage admissions process. The school uses the Quest Admissions exam board for its 11+ assessment and includes an interview stage as part of the selection process. If your child would rather be in a small school in the countryside than a large one in a city, Gateways is worth the drive. It is an independent co-educational day school for two to eighteen in the village of Harewood, between Leeds and Harrogate, with around 525 pupils on a sixteen-acre site. Boys have been admitted to Year 7 since 2019 and the school is co-educational to the end of the sixth form, though girls still outnumber boys.

The school dates itself to September 1941, when two former teachers, Nancy Simpson and Lillian Cox, opened it with fifteen pupils in a converted house in Alwoodley. They started it for parents who did not want to evacuate their children, which is an unusual reason for a school to exist and a decent clue to its character. Numbers doubled by the second term. Since 1947 it has leased the Dower House on the Harewood estate, the house the estate built for its widows, and that building is still the middle of the school with newer ones around it.

The three houses are named after Yorkshire country houses, Beningbrough, Harewood and Newby, and every new Year 7 is given an older pupil from Year 9 and a mentor from the Lower Sixth through their house. Entry at eleven is by adaptive online tests in English, maths and reasoning at a combined entrance and scholarship day in late January, weighed alongside school reports and a reference, and the school is clear that it is not pass or fail. Classes run between fourteen and eighteen. It suits a child who would be lost in a big year group, and a family who would rather their child were known than ranked.
