Dartford Grammar School for Girls is a selective girls' grammar school that uses the GL exam for its 11+ entry. There is no interview stage as part of the admissions process. While there is no strict catchment area, the school reserves places for girls living in its priority area after passing the Kent Test.

If your daughter is curious, self-motivated and hungry for a real challenge, Dartford Grammar School for Girls is a selective school with an outlook that reaches well beyond Kent. The Good Schools Guide describes a high-performing school with strong pastoral care, best suited to able girls willing to go the extra mile. What sets it apart is the International Baccalaureate, which sits alongside the more usual qualifications and gives the place a global, interdisciplinary feel that the Guide picks out. It is a programme the school has long invested in, and it shapes the way girls are taught to think across subjects rather than in silos.

The school opened in 1904 as Dartford County School and has grown into one of the larger grammars in the area, on Shepherds Lane in Dartford, taking boys as well as girls into its sixth form. The arts are taken seriously: it holds an Artsmark Gold award, and girls are encouraged into art, dance, drama and music as well as sport and leadership. Independent thinking is something the school actively asks for rather than just hopes to see, and parents describe a busy, ambitious environment with a wide menu of enrichment beyond lessons. For a daughter who likes ideas and likes connecting them, the international flavour running through everything is a real draw.

This suits a girl who wants genuine academic stretch and an outward-looking education, and who will enjoy being among others who feel the same. The school is led by headteacher Mrs Sharon Pritchard. It is the kind of place where a curious, hard-working daughter can aim high and find the support to get there.

Your daughter first needs to reach the required standard in the Kent Test. If she qualifies and the school is oversubscribed, places are offered in this order: looked-after and previously looked-after girls; girls eligible for Pupil Premium; then 100 places reserved for girls living in the Borough of Dartford or named nearby parishes; then any remaining qualified girls, wherever they live. There is no sibling priority. Within each group, girls are ranked by Kent Test score, with distance as the tie-break.

What happens if my child is ill on 11+ test day at Dartford Grammar School for Girls?

The Kent Test is run by Kent County Council, not the school, so contact the Kent Secondary Admissions Team as soon as your daughter is unwell. Kent arranges the tests and decides on any alternative sitting, so let them know before the test day if you can. For extra time or other access arrangements, you must tell Kent when you register her in Jun, and provide supporting evidence from her primary school so suitable arrangements can be agreed in advance.
