It is an independent day school for girls aged 4 to 18, set on a hill in north London with a genuinely warm culture and results — 94% A*-B at A-level — that prove warmth and academic stretch are not mutually exclusive. Girls from outside the school join at 11+ via the London Consortium tests, sat in January of Year 6 — a practical relief for families also considering South Hampstead, Francis Holland and other Consortium schools, as one test covers all of them.
What gives Channing its particular character is a philosophy it calls "ten per cent braver" — the idea that girls should push themselves just beyond their comfort zone, try things they might get wrong and find that failing at something is where the learning actually starts. That sits naturally alongside its Unitarian roots, which bring a genuinely open-minded, inclusive spirit to the place. The motto is Conabor — "I shall try" — and it means what it says. Art is a visible strength, sport has been growing and the performing arts have a proper home in the Arundel Centre. Beyond the school gates, sixth formers run breakfast and reading clubs at local primaries, the school sponsors a community fair in Highgate and girls have worked on ceramics and bronze sculpture with students from neighbouring schools.

Yes. Channing offers means-tested bursaries to help families who could not otherwise afford the fees, and these can cover up to the full tuition fee depending on your circumstances. At 11+ they apply to girls joining in Year 7. You first register your daughter for a place, then complete a separate bursary form covering your household income and finances, supported by documentary evidence, by the published deadline. What scholarships does Channing School offer?
At 11+, Channing offers Academic and Music scholarships. Every girl who sits the 11+ entrance exam is automatically considered for a Year 7 Academic Scholarship based on her scores, with no separate application needed. For a Music Scholarship, you indicate your interest on the admissions application, then submit a video recording; selected candidates are invited to an audition in January. Scholarships recognise ability and potential rather than financial need.
What is the Channing School 11+ interview like?
Every girl who sits the 11+ exam is interviewed, so there is nothing to worry about if she has an off day in the written papers. Candidates meet the Head of Year 7 and take part in team building activities, which are not scored, followed by an individual interview with a senior member of staff lasting around twenty minutes. There is no need to prepare anything in advance or bring anything along. It is a warm chance for staff to get to know your daughter.
