If you have a boy who would settle happily into a steady, long-established school, Carre's is one of the oldest in Lincolnshire and wears its history with quiet confidence. It sits on Northgate in the market town of Sleaford, founded in 1604 by Robert Carre, and its Latin motto — 'to deserve' — sets a tone that has held for four centuries. Its alumni over the centuries have included a Royalist poet, an Air Marshal, a forensic pathologist and a British ambassador to three different countries — an eclectic spread for a market town grammar.

Today it is a selective school for boys aged 11 to 16, with a co-educational sixth form run jointly with St George's Academy and Kesteven and Sleaford High School. The school builds its work around four words — respect, resilience, resourcefulness and reflection — and means it: behaviour is calm, expectations are clear and boys know where they stand. Alongside the academic core there is sport, music, band, choir and Duke of Edinburgh, and the site mixes buildings thought to date from the school's earliest years with newer sports facilities and a full-size all-weather pitch.

It suits a boy who responds to structure and a clear set of values to live up to, in a school that has been quietly getting on with the job since the reign of James I.

How do you get a place at Carre's Grammar School?

First, a child needs to reach the required standard in the Lincolnshire 11+ tests, set by GL Assessment for the Lincolnshire Consortium of Grammar Schools. Reaching the standard does not guarantee a place. If the school is oversubscribed, places go in order: looked-after and previously looked-after children; then children registered for Pupil Premium, meaning free school meals at any point in the last six years; then children with a sibling at a school in the Community Inclusive Trust; then children living closest. There is no catchment area, and a lottery breaks any tie.

What happens if my child is ill on 11+ test day at Carre's Grammar School?

Do not send your child in if they are ill on test day. Contact the school as soon as you can and the test can be sat on a later date by arrangement. For children with additional needs, the consortium offers access arrangements such as large-print papers, a scribe for writing difficulties, and extra time where an EHCP shows it is needed. Any support mirrors what the primary school already provides as the normal way of working, so declare any needs when you register.
