Boston Grammar School is a selective boys' grammar school for 11+ entry, using the GL exam board. There is no interview stage as part of the admissions process. The pass mark and selectivity ratio for 11+ entry are currently unknown.

If your son would settle better in a smaller grammar where he is known rather than numbered, Boston Grammar is worth knowing. At around 870 pupils it is a comfortable size, sitting at the southern edge of town close to the River Witham and within sight of the Boston Stump — the famous tower of St Botolph's that has dominated this corner of Lincolnshire for centuries. It is a selective boys' grammar from eleven to eighteen, with a co-educational sixth form.

The history is quietly extraordinary. Founded by royal charter of Philip and Mary in 1555, its oldest section — built in 1567 and originally known as the "big school" — is now the school library, so boys still work within walls that have stood for nearly five centuries. More striking still: the South End site served as the model for Boston Latin School, the first school in what would become the United States of America. The motto, Floreat Bostona — May Boston Flourish — is still sung at prize-giving and on Charter Day, which is the kind of living tradition that either charms you immediately or tells you everything you need to know about whether the place is right for your son.

It admits boys who place in the top quarter of the local cohort on the entrance test, and it suits a grounded, academically able boy whose family wants a steady school with deep roots — rather than a large town-centre name.

How do you get a place at Boston Grammar School?

Your son first needs to reach the required standard in the Lincolnshire 11+, the Consortium test in verbal and non-verbal reasoning. Boston Grammar has no catchment area. If more boys qualify than there are places, the school ranks them: looked-after and previously looked-after children first, then boys eligible for the Pupil Premium, then boys with a sibling at the school, then straight-line distance from home to school. If two boys cannot be separated, the last place is decided by an independently drawn lottery.

What happens if my child is ill on 11+ test day at Boston Grammar School?

Do not send your son in to sit the test if he is ill. Contact the school and the test can be taken on a later date by arrangement. One thing to know: because age is set by the date the test is taken, a later sitting can change how his result is standardised. If your son has a special educational need, declare it on the registration form. The Consortium follows JCQ rules and, after talking to his primary, can put in place support such as extra time where an EHCP shows it is needed.
