If your child is curious, loves languages, and would relish a school with an unusually international outlook, Bexley Grammar in Welling is one of the more interesting state grammars in southeast London. It opened in 1955 — Edward Heath, then the local MP, not only opened the school but later used his influence to block a proposed merger that would have done away with it altogether — and the Heath Building still bears his name. Around 1,500 pupils, boys and girls, enter via the Bexley selection test.
Languages are its great passion and genuine distinction. Every Year 7 pupil studies Latin alongside French or German; in Year 8 they add a second modern language from a range that includes Spanish, Italian, Russian, Chinese and Japanese. All pupils take two languages to GCSE — a serious commitment that most schools, selective or otherwise, would baulk at. Music, drama and sport run through school life alongside the academic core, and the atmosphere parents describe is calm, purposeful and warm.
It suits a curious, intellectually restless child who will thrive in a language-rich environment and who wants a school that takes genuine breadth seriously from the very first day.

There is no catchment area.

If your child is unwell, do not send them in. Tell their headteacher straight away and provide medical evidence, such as a doctor's note. Access arrangements, such as extra time or adapted papers, can be requested through the school between 1 Mar and the end of spring term, with supporting evidence, and should mirror the support given in your child's own school.
