Beths Grammar School
Beths Grammar School is a selective boys' grammar school in Bexley. Its 11+ entrance exam uses the Quest Admissions board, and the school does not conduct interviews as part of its admissions process. Approximately 30% of children achieve a high enough mark in the Bexley Selection Test for consideration.
If you have a boy who is curious and willing to work, and you want a calm, settled school where he can simply get on with things, Beths Grammar is worth a look. It is a selective boys' school in Bexley, on the southeast edge of London, with a mixed sixth form, and its roots go back to 1945 when it opened as Erith Technical School. The name Beths comes from a later incarnation — Bexley and Erith Technical High School — and over the years it moved to its present Hartford Road site and took grammar status.
What gives Beths its own flavour is an unlikely specialism: Mandarin Chinese. In 2010 it became a Confucius Classroom hub school for Mandarin teaching and was one of the first schools in the country to join the government's Mandarin Excellence Programme — no small commitment for a state grammar in southeast London. French, German and Spanish are on offer too, and regular trips abroad include visits to China. It is the kind of detail that tells you something about a school's appetite for doing things properly rather than adequately.
Calm, orderly behaviour is one of Beths' clearest strengths — the kind of settled atmosphere that lets boys get on with the day without drama. The school's values were worked out by pupils, staff and governors together, and they centre on stretching boys academically while keeping things steady and humane. For a boy who is keen to work hard, take up what's on offer — languages especially — and thrive in a place that feels looked after, Beths delivers.

How do you get a place at Beths Grammar School?
Your son first needs to be deemed selective in the Bexley 11+ Selection Test, run by Bexley LA. Being selective does not guarantee a place. When places are oversubscribed, they go in this order: children in or previously in local authority care, boys with one of the highest 180 scores, those with a sibling at the school, children of staff, up to 12 places for Pupil Premium or free school meals pupils by distance, then nearness of home to the school. There is no catchment area; distance is the final tie-break.
What happens if my child is ill on 11+ test day at Beths Grammar School?
If your son is unwell on the test day, do not send him to the test. Tell the head of his primary school, and Bexley LA will arrange a later sitting, telling you the date and venue in advance. A medical certificate or other evidence will be needed, and only illness or serious personal circumstances are accepted. A child who becomes ill during the test and cannot finish is not allowed to sit again; a review panel then decides whether he should be deemed selective. Access arrangements are arranged through Bexley LA.
