Aylesbury Grammar School (AGS) is a boys' grammar school in Buckinghamshire. Entry for Year 7 is via the GL 11+ exam, with a pass mark of 75% or higher. There is no interview stage as part of the admissions process.

If your son is an able, busy boy who wants to be pushed hard in the classroom while throwing himself into music, sport, and everything else a large school can offer, Aylesbury Grammar is the kind of place where he will find his feet — and, rather importantly, his people. It sits at the heart of Aylesbury itself, not marooned on some ring-road edge of town, which tells you something about how embedded it is in local life. A boys' grammar running from 11 to 18, it has well over 1,300 boys on roll and a sixth form of more than 400 — big enough to offer almost everything, small enough that a boy doesn't simply disappear into the crowd.

The school is old, as it happens — founded in 1598 by Sir Henry Lee of Ditchley, who served as Queen Elizabeth I's Champion and Master of the Armouries, which is the sort of origin story that makes a history lesson feel considerably less abstract. Entry is by the county's secondary transfer test, sat in Year 6, as part of the Buckinghamshire grammar consortium. Day to day, it is a school that takes academic stretch seriously without losing sight of the rest of the picture. A house system gives every boy a vertical community from his first day; sport is a genuine point of local pride, with boys themselves praising both the range on offer and the quality of the coaching; and the music scene is, by all accounts, the real thing rather than a prospectus afterthought.

One parent summed it up with the kind of directness that tends to be more useful than any official description: the boys are very academic, very sporty and very musical — but also very nice and well-adjusted. For a son who thrives on momentum, high expectations and good company, Aylesbury Grammar has the size, the warmth and the track record to deliver all three.

It does not include Buckingham and Winslow to the north, or the Chesham, Amersham and High Wycombe areas to the south-east.
