Abbot's Hill School
Abbot's Hill School is an independent co-educational day school in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, offering Year 7 entry through a single-stage assessment process. Candidates sit the Quest Admissions exam and participate in an interview stage as part of the admissions criteria. The school, set in 76 acres of parkland, transitioned to a mixed intake with boys joining Year 7 from September 2026.
This is a school for the child who does better when the adults know them by name rather than by set. Abbot's Hill is an independent day school in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, taking children from the nursery through to sixteen, and its senior school is now co-educational: boys joined the prep school in September 2025 and Year 7 in September 2026. A child entering Year 7 in 2027 will therefore arrive into a mixed year group, with boys already settled in Years 7 and 8. There is no boarding and no sixth form, so pupils move on elsewhere after GCSEs. The site runs to 76 acres of parkland between Hemel Hempstead and Kings Langley.
The school was founded in 1912 by three Scottish sisters, the Bairds, and that beginning still shows in daily life: pupils belong not to houses but to clans, Cameron, MacDonald and Macneil, each mixing the year groups so an eleven-year-old has older pupils to lean on from the first week. The main house is older again, built in 1836 by the paper manufacturer John Dickinson, who acted as his own architect. Boarding ended in 2003. Drama matters here; plays run in the Judi Dench Theatre, with an outdoor amphitheatre for the summer term.
The Good Schools Guide reports a parent view that 'happy children who have fun learn better', and notes that the school is small enough for staff to know every child and for friendships to cross year groups. The head speaks of pupils who are 'genuinely happy, and genuinely well-prepared for what comes next'. It suits a child who wants to be noticed rather than pushed — and who will say yes to the play.
