St Mary's Christian Brothers' Grammar School is a boys' voluntary grammar school on the Glen Road in west Belfast, with over 1,180 pupils and 175 places in Year 8. It was founded by the Christian Brothers in 1866, moved to the Glen Road in 1968, and is now run by lay staff under the Edmund Rice Schools Trust. Entry is at Year 8 through the SEAG assessment.
The school magazine is called the Simmarian, the boys are called Simmarians, and the school has put the whole archive online, year by year, back to 1936. There are gaps for the war years and then an unbroken run from 1958. If a boy's father or grandfather was here, a parent can open the volume for the year he left. The archive page opens in Irish.
Year 8 arrives through the Edmund Rice Camp, a set of team activities run during the August induction so that each boy gets to know his form class before lessons start, with a family barbecue at the end of it. For the whole of the first week, teachers walk each Year 8 class from one lesson to the next. Senior prefects are assigned to each Year 8 class, every class goes on retreat during the first term, and the term closes with a carol service and a Year 8 graduation. The school is exact about punctuality: there is a published ladder from three late arrivals through to Saturday detention at fifteen, the count runs cumulatively and does not reset each month, and a subsidised breakfast club opens at ten past eight. Juniors wear a green crested fleece and the sixth form a black one.
