St. Louis Grammar School (NI, Co Antrim)
St Louis Grammar School in Ballymena is a mixed, co-educational Catholic voluntary grammar school offering entry via the SEAG transfer assessment. The admissions process uses a single-stage examination with no interview stage. As a state-funded grammar school, there are no tuition fees, though a voluntary contribution of £120 per pupil (£240 per family) is requested for its One Fund.
St Louis Grammar School in Ballymena is a co-educational Catholic grammar school on the Cullybackey Road, with over 1,200 pupils. It was founded in 1924 by the Sisters of St Louis and opened that September with thirty-five girls. Boys were admitted for the first time in 1970, which the school's own history calls the biggest single change ever to come to it. Entry is at Year 8 through the SEAG assessment.
The school sits in a Victorian mansion that was built as a wedding present. Kintullagh House was designed by Sir Charles Lanyon for the son of a local mill owner and his bride, who was of French extraction, and the fleur-de-lys was worked into the building's decoration in her honour. When the Sisters of St Louis arrived, their order being French as well, the school says they appreciated the touch. The house is now the Centre for Creative and Expressive Arts. There is a centenary garden on the ground where the sisters were originally buried.
The seven houses are named after places in the Glens of Antrim: Laragh, Layde, Lir, Lisbreen, Lismoyle, Lurig and Lyndon. Points go up for achievement and come down for misbehaviour; totals run on a screen in the foyer and the winning house gets a trip each term. New pupils come in for two bonding days in mid August, and the school year opens in three waves, with Year 8 sharing their first day only with the incoming sixth form.
