Regent House School
Regent House School is a co-educational, non-denominational controlled grammar school in Newtownards admitting pupils via the single-stage SEAG entrance assessment. As a state-funded grammar school, there are no tuition fees, and admission does not include an interview stage.
Regent House is a co-educational, non-denominational controlled grammar school on the Circular Road in Newtownards, and one of the largest in Northern Ireland, with roughly fifteen hundred pupils in the grammar school alone. It also runs its own preparatory department for children from four to eleven on the same campus. Entry to Year 8 is through the SEAG assessment.
The school is named after a building it left more than sixty years ago. It traces back to an intermediate school founded in 1878, which closed, was revived in 1919 with thirty-four pupils in a hall on Mary Street, and in 1924 merged with the town's Ladies' School to become what it is now. In 1927 the governors bought Regent House, a Regency mansion in Regent Street, moved in the following year and took its name. The school outgrew it and moved to the purpose-built Circular Road site in 1962, keeping the name.
The day starts at ten to nine with form class and finishes at twenty past three, over nine periods of thirty-five minutes. Because of the size, breaks are staggered: the senior school takes its break at ten to eleven and lunch at five to one, while the junior school goes earlier. Pastoral care is organised as three schools within the school, junior, middle and senior, each with its own head, and every year group has two year teachers as well as form tutors. There are four houses, Castlereagh, Clandeboye, Scrabo and Strangford, all named for places around the Ards and Strangford Lough. Girls wear bottle-green blazers and boys wear black.
