Loreto Grammar School, Omagh
Loreto Grammar School, Omagh is a partially selective Catholic grammar school for girls that admits pupils into Year 8 using the SEAG transfer assessment. Half of its Year 8 places are awarded via academic selection through SEAG, with the remaining half allocated on non-academic criteria. There is no interview stage in the admissions process.
Loreto Grammar School is a Catholic girls' grammar school on James Street in Omagh, with 892 pupils from eleven to eighteen and around 129 starting in Year 8. Half its Year 8 places go on the SEAG assessment and the other half are allocated on non-academic grounds, so a strong score matters for one route in and not the other. It is worth knowing that when you plan.
The school was founded in 1855, when a local priest asked the Loreto order in Dublin for a community and Mother Felicitas Murray travelled north by stagecoach with five sisters to a rented house in Omagh. It marked its 170th year in 2025. Traces of the boarding school it used to be are still in the building: the art department occupies what was built as the dormitory wing in 1960, and boarding was phased out in 1975. An Erard grand piano made in 1846, which sat in the convent house for years, has been restored and now stands in the music department.
The school is also one of six due to move to the new Strule Shared Education Campus in Omagh, which it says is planned to be fully operational in September 2028 and will hold four thousand pupils from schools across the town, each keeping its own ethos. In the meantime, one recent change is worth flagging to any parent: phones. Every girl in Years 8 to 11 is given a lockable pouch, phones go in it switched off each morning and come out at an unlocking station on the way home. Contact during the day goes through the school office.
